is the compound of Photo (Light) and Catalyst that means a catalyst using
light. It literally processes catalyst reaction using light as energy source.
There are many kinds of photocatalysts such as TiO₂, ZnO and CdS. Among
these, mainly TiO₂(Anatase) is being used because it can receive enough
energy from sunshine as it can react at 387.5nm, chemically stable, is active
to lights and non-toxic.

3. Hydrophilicity of TiO₂ Photocatalyst
- Mechanism of hydrophilic reaction
As you can see in the above picture, when water moles in the air approach
to the surface of TiO₂ under the light, they become attached physically.
Because of electron pair resistance principle, hydrogen atom comes to the
center of oxygen atom. When other water moles approach to this structure,
they will be combined by hydrogen combination. Because of this mechanism,
photocatalyst will have water hydrophilicity.
- Ultra hydrophilicity of photocatalyst
When applying thin photocatalyst film on the surface
of glass or tiles, the surface of the materials will have hydrophilicity.
It will be free from dust or other contaminants and the loose materials
will be wiped away with water drops. Therefore, there will not be dirty
marks or contaminants on the surface even after it is dry.
